A BMX World Cup final at the Roc d'Azur
After hosting the UCI Marathon World Cup final in 2005, the Roc d'Azur's main event this year is the UCI Supercross World Cup final 2006.
The first leg of the UCI BMX Supercross was held in San José (California) on 9th and 10th September 2006; the provisional ranking being as follows: 1- Michal Prokop (CZE), 2 -Donny Robinson (USA), 3 - Arnaud Dubois (BEL). As announced, the second and final leg of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup will be held in Fréjus on 6th and 7th October 2006, on the '4 cross' area of the Roc d'Azur.
Christophe Burri, UCI event coordinator explains the reasons for this choice:
After the first leg of the UCI BMX World Cup in California, France is playing host to the second and final leg on 6th and 7th October 2006. What do you think of the France-BMX duo? It's a great duo as France has already proven with the organisation of the World Championships in Bercy in 2005. It was a phenomenal competition, a great atmosphere and a perfect organisation. France is also a nation which produces top BMX champions, like Thomas Allier from Sauqueuse St Lucien, who ranks amongst the favourites in this cup.
What are the assets of a site like Fréjus when organising the UCI BMW World Cup?The Roc is a splendid location alongside the mountains and the sea, as well as being an exceptional promotional window for both the challengers and the UCI alike. The proximity of all the different cyclists has a huge part to play as regards the notoriety of such a competition. In Fréjus, the UCI BMW World Cup gives riders the opportunity to really prepare themselves for Beijing 2008. What is the BMX track like at the Roc and who fashions it?It's a team from UCI who is in charge of fashioning the track. Professional constructors and former racers decide on the curves, the jumps, the technical sections and the bends. Who are the top names who stand out from the crowd? You would have to say that the Argentinians are very strong, but the Czech Michal Prokop, Australian Jamie Gray and Swiss cyclist Roger Rinderknecht won't give up without a fight either… UCI BMX Supercross World Cup ProgrammeFriday 6th October 1430 - 1630 hours: QualifiersSaturday 7th October 1100 - 1700 hours: Finals
As is the case every year, the Roc 58 will welcome the world elite of the sport. Julien Absalon, reigning Olympic and World champion (3 world championship titles), Swiss athlete Christophe Sauser, his successor in the last World Championships, Thomas Frischknecht, 3rd in the Gets Worlds in 2004, Nino Schurter, the World Champion Hope and a figurehead of the sport, Miguel Martinez, who will be announcing his retirement during his final participation in the Roc. Added to this will be the surprise participation of the Italian Gilberto Simoni, double winner of the Giro (2001 and 2003), who recently became Champion of Italy in the mountain bike marathon. He left the road at the end of August in order to devote himself to this new activity.
